When it comes to hair, often the most complementary styles are nearly effortless. Case and point, Reese Witherspoon‘s low ponytail at the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.  It works just as well on long bob as it does on really-long locks and only takes a few minutes to master.

Truth: I typically don’t think of a ponytail when I think of the red carpet, but you know what? It’s very clean, chic, and allows the person’s beauty to be the real focal point. Emma Stone also opted for the simple style with her short ‘do.

Ready to wear this red-carpet hairstyle in real life? Here’s how to achieve the look.

Brush hair, part to the side, brush into a low ponytail and fasten with a hair tie. Next, cover the elastic by taking a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrapping around the hair tie. Secure with a couple hair pins or bobby pins by tucking into the base of the ponytail so that pins are hidden.

To get your low ponytail to look like Miss Witherspoon’s start with curled hair. I like to use an inch-barrel iron and go around my head curling away from my face, then gently shake out curls and lightly mist with a hairspray that won’t make it crunchy.

Play with it so hair is adjusted to your liking. Fluff the ponytail a pinch so that it’s a little messy and full or rub a little hair oil though the ponytail if you’re looking for sleeker style. It’s one style that can go dressy, casual, curly, wavy, or super straight.
