Ding ding ding! New year, new battle ladies and this time it’s all eyes on eyeliner. The newest and trendiest eyeliner choices are gel and liquid, but which liner comes out on top? I’m here to break down the pros and cons to help you choose your champion.
Gel Time
First up we have gel liner, a super long lasting, very pigmented liner that comes in a pot. Thicker color and the ability to smudge and blend comes from using a gel. Usually best suited for those with an unsteady hand because the lines created with gel are forgiving and luckily, mistakes are barely noticeable. This is perfect if you are going for the smoky effect, as seen on Angelina Jolie.
Here you can see how her liner is not exact, but heavier and a tad smudged, which gives her a mysterious look.

Some inconveniences of the gel liner is that most times you are required to buy a separate brush for application (which can run up your beauty bill). Most gel liners do not easily create a sleek, thin, precise line.The opponent, liquid liner, is best used for dark, dramatic, and smooth lines – perfect for the cat-eye look, with the ability to quickly create very thin and exact lines. The most famous celeb to rock the liquid liner is Taylor Swift. She’s notorious for always having a precise cat eye, which is achieved best through liquid liner.
Liquid Line
If you look close, you can see her liner separates at the outer corner of her eyes into two precise liner “tails”. Ulta makes a great liquid liner in multiple colors. You can’t get this precision through gel and brush! Although maybe tempting, liquid is not the choice if you have a shaky hand, or if you desire a smoky look like Angelina’s. It’s definitely the most convenient of the two, with liner and brush all in one piece. This way you never have to worry about misplacing brush or liner (woohoo!).
As far as pricing and availability goes, the two run roughly equivalent (although an additional cost comes when buying a brush to use for the gel). It’s hard to decide which liner is best, because both can create very different and varying looks. As far as the outcome of this beauty battle goes, the winner is different for each of us!
